The Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit (MHRTC) is a refundable tax credit available for your 2023 Income Tax and Benefit Return and beyond. It allows you to claim certain renovation expenses to create a self-contained secondary unit for a senior or an adult eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, enabling them to live with a qualifying relative. You can claim up to $50,000 in eligible renovation costs, with a tax credit of 15% of those expenses, up to a maximum of $7,500 per claim.
Owners of a principal residence in BC will automatically qualify for this property tax grant as long as their assessed home value is below the minimum threshold ($2,175,000 in 2025). The basic ('regular') grant ranges from $570-$770 depending on location. There are also additional grants for seniors, veterans and persons with disabilities. You can apply for these grants online and retroactively, here.
